PDF vs Kindle vs iBooks

The Kanji Learner’s Course Graded Reading Sets are being released on three platforms: Amazon Kindle, the iBooks store, and direct from the author as PDFs. Pricing will be nearly or exactly equivalent, with the possible exception of discounted sales for PDF bundles.

Like PDF readers, both Kindle and iBooks now allow Scrolling View (at least on tablets and smartphones). This feature allows you to display each practice item without displaying its phonetic and English glosses.

Below are two iBooks screenshots from Volume 2, the first in Scrolling View (iOS only), the second in Page View (MacOS). Note that Page View requires you to advance by page-by-page, rather than scrolling one line at a time. The two layout types are similar on Kindle. Click either image to enlarge.

Format comparison:

PDF

* Click on  words  to look up, depending on your OS.
* Readable on various platforms
* Allows you to print certain pages if you wish (if you want to print the entire book, it’s better to buy the print version, if available for that volume).
* Only Vols. 1-3 currently available. Release of higher volumes in PDF format will depend on PDF sales of Vols. 1-3.

Kindle

* Tap/Double-tap to look up words
* Readable on all Kindle devices as well as tablets/smartphones with the Kindle app installed (including iOS devices)
* MOBI format

iBooks

* Tap/Double-tap to look up words
* Readable on devices with iBooks installed (iOS or MacOS). Though this includes Macs, note that the MacOS version of iBooks currently lacks the all-important Scrolling View feature.
* EPUB format
